It’s been a lackluster start to the year for the technology sector and an especially volatile ride for software stocks. As the chart below shows, as a group, the S&P US Software Index is down 21.87% compared to a much smaller decline of the S&P Information Technology Index of 3.51%. After weeks of market turbulence and billions of dollars in market cap shed in the space, a wave of optimism has arrived thanks to an artificial-intelligence company. Anthropic, a leading AI startup, unveiled updates to its Claude Cowork tool, sparking renewed confidence across the industry. With big names like Salesforce, Google, and Docusign jumping on board, software shares rallied and investors breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Though this tide won’t lift all software boats, the message is clear: software companies aren’t being left behind—they’re finding ways to thrive alongside AI. Even as some firms streamline their teams and rethink their strategies, the focus is on boosting productivity and adapting to new technology. Salesforce, Workday, and Snowflake are all showing investors how they’re embracing AI, while payments processor Block made headlines with a bold move to shrink its workforce and rely more heavily on AI-powered tools.

Often times, we think of “tech” broadly, so it’s worth spending some time on what sets AI technology apart from traditional software companies.
Traditional software companies build applications that follow programmed rules—think customer relationship management tools or accounting platforms. These programs are reliable and predictable, performing the same tasks every time unless developers step in to make updates.
AI technology, by contrast, offers several key advantages such as adaptability: AI systems learn from data and improve over time, responding to new information and evolving business needs. Automation: AI can handle complex, repetitive, and creative tasks with minimal human intervention, freeing up task hours so teams can achieve higher-level work. Insight Generation: AI analyzes patterns and trends, uncovering insights that traditional software might miss. And finally efficiency: AI-powered tools can boost productivity, enabling smaller teams to accomplish more and do it faster.
It is these advantages that are driving software companies to partner with AI innovators and incorporate AI solutions into their offerings. Industry experts agree that the biggest software players are well-positioned to weather these changes, thanks to their experience and vast stores of data. However, not everyone is immune—cybersecurity stocks have faced challenges as AI-driven vulnerability scanning becomes more common. Names like Crowdstrike and Palo Alto have been two of the more notable names to be caught in the AI crossfire. Still, leaders in the space are confident that security will remain a critical piece of the puzzle in the AI age. These companies will have the unique opportunity to build out solutions to prevent against faster moving attacks – and this can’t be solved with vibe coding (we’ll get to that later).

The bottom line? The software sector is evolving, not disappearing. Companies are forging partnerships with AI innovators, and the journey to greater productivity is just beginning. Investors and market participants will be watching closely to see which firms can adapt and grow as AI reshapes the landscape.
I’m almost certain most are familiar with the term ‘vibe’, and depending on whether you’re talking to a Millennial or Gen Z or Gen Alpha, it can take on various connotations. But there’s a new buzz word circling around the AI industry and that’s “vibe coding”. Stay with me. This playful new approach to building software is taking the tech world by storm, thanks to AI-powered coding assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot. The idea is simple: let the AI do the heavy lifting, and trust its suggestions as you create websites, apps, or games—no need to obsess over every line of code.
Vibe coding is opening doors for both seasoned and novice developers. With AI tools making real-time predictions and offering intuitive help, anyone with a vision can turn it into a working project faster than ever. It’s especially handy for small, low-stakes creations, where speed and simplicity matter more than technical perfection.
But there’s a catch: vibe coding isn’t a one size fits all. When it comes to larger, more complex systems—especially those dealing with sensitive data or lots of users—AI-generated code can introduce errors and security risks. So if you’re thinking about launching a new webpage or app, it’s recommended approaching this carefully, especially for non-coders, as mistakes can be costly and hard to spot to a beginner.
As AI coding tools continue to improve and become more widely integrated into web hosting platforms, the barriers to software creation will keep falling. It’s an exciting time, but a little caution goes a long way. For now, vibe coding is a great way to experiment and bring ideas to life, while keeping an eye on reliability and security.
